The Path We Follow

The miracle of human life
Continues despite our failings
We are imperfect, flawed, confused
Our mistakes seem to invite doom
We continue to do wrong things
And still there is something
The basic story in all runs deep
Every human should have worth
We are clever, bright, talented
From our moment leaving the womb
To life as children, our roots
Through years of struggle as teens
To becoming adults still learning
Even the elderly can know
And still keep growing
Before we end in the tomb
By learning we are trying
But we live in a world
That has become madness
How can we still exist
In an age of nuclear bombs
Global warming and viruses
Wars and predators abound
Riots and pandemic strife
Slaughter seems our slogan
Living by the sword means
Those doing so die by it too
How can any one ever survive
When the point of being alive
Has never been to gather stuff
Has never been to become rich
To live well means something
Far deeper than lust or dreams
Because another deep truth is
All who live will eventually die
So it would be good to know
What does existence actually mean?
