To Persist

In the darkness of a war, when all seemed lost
Before the Allies returned to France. This was
1943, when little seemed hopeful. A message
Was sent to members of the Maquis. Hitler's
Soldiers cloaked in black, bearing a crooked
Cross made a final push to eliminate partisans
Who'd fought to save their nation. They wore a
different cross. The Cross of St Lorraine Born
proudly by Joan of Arc, Savior of France
against a different invader.

"We've fought the enemy, with vigor
Since this invasion began
They've killed our children
Not just the soldiers and leaders
They abuse elders and rape women
They seek to be the controllers
You cannot stay here, for it is not safe
I am remaining behind, to be the one
Who will fight to give you time
To flee, to fight, we must live
Spend your life upon resistance
Never surrender, never give in
The pain you now endure and face
Will be multiplied in their camps
Where they will torture you
They will torment you
Attempt to steal all
That you embrace
Our land, our people
Our history and legacies
We'll never survive this war
Without your persistence
We cannot quit now
Or we abandon our own
There is nothing without hope
So fight
Keep fighting for the future
Even if we must die, alone
Without hopes we will fight
This future is for ourselves
And all of our children
