Masada, isolated above the desert, in natural difficult terrain
Roman Legion X fought the Jewish Zealots over two years
Zealots were religious, and defenders of the Jewish nation
The fortress atop the high plateau, seemed invulnerable
It looked over the desert below, harsh, lifeless and dry
Built by Herod and used later by the Zealots in defense
Against a Roman legion who'd fight with naked aggression
Using the advantage of numbers and strategy and tactics
Their 15000 men fought no more than 1000 Zealot defenders
The two year conflict seemed endless, for both sides of war
But even then, the Romans refused to leave, to live or die
The Zealots were fanatics, politically and religious beliefs
The two ideals gave strength to the defenders of Masada
And after a while, as the walls fell after a long campaign
The defending forces had used swords upon themselves
And they left no warriors alive to be taken prisoner
They left a legacy of defiance, of a bitter resistance
The Jewish people held it high, as a memory and fire
The Zealots were examples for a fight into the future
Wherever they lived, they had to fight, knowing
They were not the first, they'd fight to create a state
With values of defenders who never were defeated
