The Last March: Todesmärsche

After years of violence and torture
The death camp keepers decided
To escape prosecution, to escape execution
They had to abandon the camps and run
But they brought prisoners along
The Allies would end the horror
From the West: US forces had come
From the East: Soviet troops
Who discovered dead bodies
And pyrmaids of burnt remains
The camps burnt down
Scattered debris of war
Along side the malicious harvest
The effects and memories of lives
The gears of the death machine
Broken now and displayed
A criminal enemy went on the run
They had to try to escape
For after what the Allies found
Which could be called body orchards
No one involved could be redeemed
No holy ground
Instead killing zone, evil places
With the SS masters had gone
Bringing with them the innocent
To use, perhaps, as hostages
Many prisoners fell, and died
Buried there, in their tracks
The march went on
The SS chose to keep its hostages
Amidst the madness revealed
The crimes of the state
So surreal, manifestly vile
They were surrounded
Eventually shot down
The evil so now clear
No one wanted to forgive
And few did
