UPRISING

On August 1, 1944 as the Nazi armies fled the Eastern front
Seeing the German army retreat from the Soviet Red Army
The Home Army of Poland thought it would strike
To strike a blow against the tyrant, and finally free Warsaw
Some hoped they'd be assisted by the Red Army nearby
Who had halted their drive, about to cross the Vistula river
But the Nazis refused to allow Warsaw to ever be free
Sending desperately needed troops and armor to fight
And understand, whoever won, Warsaw was destroyed
With elite armor, SS units, artillery, air units
The Nazis fought this battle with vigor
Every available unit sent in to decide
As the Poles fought their war for their land
Hope meant nothing at the time when they died
The effort by the Home Army of Poland was defeated
And it became clear, for all sides, that all hope was lost
With reserves exhausted, a cruel message was delivered
The Red Army wasn't an ally, only one in name, not liberators
The Nazis were unwilling to just fade away, without a cost
