Making Peace

the B-36 Peacemaker

After defeating the Axis, the winners gathered
In retrospect, they chose a path most drastic
Where before they might've used diplomacy
With the world newly divided they argued
The victorious allies prepared to fight
With weapons more violent than ever
The winning sides prepared for the next
With weapons that would seem fantastic
In a world armed with bullets and bombs
Missiles and nuclear weapons seemed magic
With peace at hand, nations chose the path
That was compelling and deeply tragic
For the world had an opportunity
To live in peace or find common ground
Nothing like nuclear war, so very traumatic
Arming themselves to the skin of their teeth
Neither side could continence loss
For they'd lose freedom or sovereignty
And war would prove no relief
The end of the cold war was beautiful
The path forward could have been great
If fear, ego and greed had not been unleashed

“In our new age of terrifying, lethal gadgets, which supplanted so swiftly the old one, the first great aggressive war, if it should come, will be launched by suicidal little madmen pressing an electronic button. Such a war will not last long and none will ever follow it. There will be no conquerors and no conquests, but only the charred bones of the dead on and uninhabited planet.”  William L. Shirer
