Beowulf, Warrior Prince

To understand Beowulf one must understand the past
That the night was populated by demons and forces
Humans tried to hide at night in their safe places
Fear alive in their minds, for the coming evening
Demons and gods real, even as Christianity advanced
The beasts occupied a land filled with death orchards
A world so different from the present
Where fear comes from other humans
When Beowulf was called to help others
It wasn't the imagination of a poet's dreaming
He came to fight a true, evident foe
The child and mother of the fallen Cain
A warrior of honor would have to expend his life
To the remove the original source of human shame
God's plan had been destroyed by ignorance, envy
And by shedding blood of the beast
By refusing to save his flesh, he removed the stain
Beowulf was now to end the cycle, to retaliate
No more false gods, no more beasts of the flesh
To kill them meant humanity was now free
To worship the original, to accept the word
Of the one God, of the path of forgiveness
To go forward from this place in victory
Read Beowulf from the distance of the present
Mock the belief in creatures of the night
And never wonder upon the creation
Of a prince who'd fight and die for others
