The Mission

When our ships reached the next solar system
Some people believed that God was with them
We were virgins to space, the moment our first
We had fled our home after we'd destroyed earth
Our remnant populace now most in hypersleep
We'd believed the species lost, survival a dream
First contact would be a time of some anxiety
We'd celebrate the day with joy, with propriety
Science saved us, allowed us one final escape
But remembering that science once funded
To create all the terrible and machines of war
And the damage to civilization would escalate
Humans should have been lost, it was fate
So some of us watched in our stations there
Praying to whoever listened, our people dared
At the moment of contact with our counterparts
As we meet, a human and alien new era started
Every act now, upon a new stage
The humans and aliens begin a new age
