The Cost

Long ago when it had happened
We'd never even noticed
Entered into terminal descent
When all species began dying
All of our wars and addictions
Had led us to a dark abyss
With treasure, lust and violence
We found our deepest focus
We'd ignored all of the warnings
Heard screams, horrifying
We were enslaved by masters
By those desires we serve
We walked up the steps of the gallows
And then we twisted in the wind
We were hung, by our own hand
Yes, we were our own volunteers
For a punishment much deserved

“We are each our own devil, and
we make this world our hell.”
Oscar Wilde
