Humans have hunted and fished for their entire existence
Yet haven't always known the consequence of the harvest
Some methods lead to disaster, some will have less impact
Not everyone agrees that humans should kill and eat meat
The idea is less about diet as about living with less violence
What is true is that the creatures killed probably prefer to live
Outside of starvation humans don't need meat to be complete
(For the record: I try to eat less meat, and harm fewer animals, but I still eat meat. I was a vegetarian who rarely cheated for 2 years in the 1990s, but I never liked the diet, and healthwise didn't really benefit.)
