Changing the Playing Field

On November 14, 1960, a 6 year old girl named Ruby Bridges became a hero
She went to school, like any other child hopefully does but this was different
America's normal condition was that for decades, there was a racism hidden
The poisoned minds of the era believed there were savage racial inequalities
To them to teach all together, would mean blacks and whites were equals
Ruby Bridges tried to attend a white school, one with only white children
Despite trash being thrown, vulgar and racial terms used, she went, entered in
As a world watched holding its breath, fearing to see Ruby become a martyr
Eventually the rest of America woke up to the reality that all children suffer
When counted as a color, or just a number, a label, but not as a real person
Children deserve to be educated and deserve love, whatever their skin color
