Sometimes The Dragon

In combat, sometimes the dragon wins
Superior fire power and armored skin
The mark of excellence in battle is clear
At times, an enemy able to get near
And with specialized weapons
Lances to the ancient knight
And punch holes in the dragon
By the heroic act kill it
Sometimes they battle as equals
If not in size but in evil
The common view of dragons
Is that they are malevolent
But the humans are equally cruel
Whatever myths of righteousness offer
If each force is more malevolent
Than the other
The worst human imaginations
Of the power of a dragon
Makes it sound invulnerable
But humans invented dragons
Each armored beast is able to be slain
For humans are also powerful
And humans are clever, and perhaps trained
Humans are elite warriors
Ready for and good at waging war
But not every victory means joy
Sometimes the cost makes the victory
Is entirely too much to countenance
Some day soon
The world will not celebrate
Any victory in war
For the victor and loser each
Have experience inexorable doom
