They Divorced

He said, in his clearest words
I find no comfort in my pain, as usual
With no good answer for the torment
We've both experienced
I can't bear the cost of loving you
My life must go on, and yours does too
I wonder what the point of anything is
Why bother when love is the problem
We lingered there in the echoes
Of both of our competing egos
The fears and anger smothered
Sucking wind from our lungs
We cannot breathe in the misery
And as our lives pass by
Giving back our rings
Changing everything
We've given up all we have
There's no more "I'll try"
Without a moment of hope
I keep staring at the photos
Of that day when we promised
"To love forever"
Reaching as far as allowed
We'd do it together
We said, Yes, I will always
So where are we now?
