1/12/2010

300,000 human lives ended
The world didn't see it occur
Because it happened in Haiti
No, the world never pretended
They simply refused to see
The death of black people
And people in poverty
Meant nothing to them
With no need for empathy
Sorrow and pain of others
Was meaningless
The poor viewed in disdain
Our wealth and comfort
Led to ignorance
Blinded to catastrophe
A world of wealth
Filled with hubris
Pride their source of vanity
The island people could drown
And all of Haiti could die
Without making a sound
And this world wouldn't notice
Or ever come to realize
Millions of lives were gone
Empathy is fine when it is easy
A passive ignorance remains
It dwells and burns in our core
Wealth functions as a fence
Defines our borders
We are broken hearted for pets
Or for all the victims of war
But somehow we ignore
Those who are too poor
Such as the victims in Haiti
