John The Baptist's Head

Some assumed he was the holy one
He knew that he was not
Told the people, no, it is not me
There is an other
The One who was to come
A God made to live in flesh
John called for all to be ready
For a messiah was coming
To an undeserving world
Foretold by the prophet
A baptist named John
His followers would be confused
John was not normal
He seemed holy
But he was different
And the glorious role refused
His people wanted a messiah
John taught them, to prepare
He led them without an ego
But he also knew in his role
His path would turn deadly
John did not shy away
From the truth of the call
He never stopped himself
From speaking out loudly
Aware of the cost of his life
He was willing, ready to lead
He was afire in the prophecy
And his role would cost him
His life, everything, and his head
His life ended as an amusement
Dying cruelly
For the violent whims of a king
And an elegant beautiful dancer
