Playing At War

I think it embarrassing, yet true
We've engaged in war and killing
Since the beginning of our species
Humans have always loved violence
From the spectacle of gladiator games
To dangerous jousts in the age of knights
Arriving in this time of virtual reality
In 3D, and moving pictures
We are entertained in our minds
With games that replay a thrill of a kill
We play at war, knowing a sort of truth
We have fun with slaughter, violence
With an act that leaves us fulfilled
Coming from a bestial anger inside
Having been present since Cain slew Abel
We play with shields and carry a lance
Because in the end we might also fight
Every generation gets the chance
To kill and be baptized
By the bleeding of our soul
And waging of the war inside
