The Luxury of a Choice

As humans tried to reach towards the heavens
They kept building, as if compelled to do so
Steel and concrete rose above the ground
Until their skyscrapers kissed the skies
Were they building a new Tower of Babel
Even as they believed in the majestic ascent
The poor and homeless remained in abject peril
The builders thought no one should ask why
But the important questions ask themselves
Have we abandoned our children
Have we ignored messages sent
Are we blind to those who hunger
They hunger for justice
For safety, for kindness and hope
The builders feigned interest
But lived high above the world
Their luxury was a materialist choice
And they had much from which to choose
It allowed them to not listen
It allowed them to be blind
They ignored the constant pleas
They couldn't hear the crying
Screaming help save us
We are breaking
Give us hope, we are dying
We've nothing left to lose
But our species has entered descent
We've lost our way
We worship money
We long for power
The struggle has been forever
Making us lose our minds
Spreading false messages
That we've a choice in this life
But is that the truth?
Perhaps the choice is different
We can endure injustice or we can flee
Like Icarus try to fly away
And finally make yourself forever free
