The Global Machine

Ancient human concepts of society were different
Than the world now, so modern and indifferent
Individuality then might lead to being an outcast
A modern interpretation of the world is invested
In a world where society's ideal comes last
In the past one person had less value than masses
The machines of capitalism take advantage of this
New ideas drive modernity, but they will test antiquity
The ancient world is comforted by the known
Individualism results in one becoming commodified
Lost in our choices as if there is an individual's role
That can be found as a member in the tribe
But should the tribe be all important and valuable?
Who do we owe civility and efforts to limit strife
Is it the local, the neighborhood or village
Our world become so connected and global
The individual and the group become gears
Of an infernal machine, designed to steal labor
In the maze of modern thought, ancient ideals
We should endeavor to be kind and honorable
To every life upon the known world

"I know of the boons that machinery has conferred on men,
all tyrants have boons to confer, but service to the
dynasty of steam and steel is a hard service and gives
little leisure to fancy to flit from field to field."
