An End to the Bleeding

To fight upon the main field of battle
The Allies would have to return
From the sites they had left
The coast of France, 4 years before
The invasion was a requirement
To begin the march upon Berlin
To end the reign of terror
Centered there
The invasion here meant
That the end was begun
The beaches of Normandy
Historic, beautiful, imposing
The Axis had them well defended
Knowing the Allies would come
The action wasn't to roll dice
It wasn't meant to dare chance
It was a plan carried out
Lose or win, being all in
Weapons ready and waiting
Planes, ships, jeeps and tanks
Carefully loaded for invasion
This was the only choice
To dare, to achieve and more
To successfully complete the task
There was a risk, more than a loss
But should they not attempt this
Europe would remain hostage
Even should there be substantial doubt
There was determination within
That an enemy empire had to fall
This wasn't about settling a score
After years of savage conflict
They had to stop the bleeding
And begin to start building
Starting a modern world all over
Choices made left but two options
Lose everything, and start again
As the war rolls on and on
Or win the battle on the beaches
And hope to Heaven
For an end the war
By December 1944

(Poet note: I am well aware the war ended in Spring 1945.  The reference was to the then oft mentioned desire to quickly end the war once fighting en masse upon the fields of France, and thereafter Germany to bring the armies home by Christmas.)
