Failing Flesh

My flesh is failing, this delicate state
A kind of worrisome obsolescence
Which the machine of life requires
We're built to last a single lifetime
A realization of the temporality
Increasing with the passing of time
With awareness since adolescence
We can ask for nothing more
Looking off to the distant horizons
They are lit brightly with fires
Our species will be driven extinct
By a failure deep in our core
The breath of forever in proximity
An awareness of an impact
Of when time stops
And then it starts again
Headfirst into an emptiness
Will our journey end
In Hades or Elysium
Waiting for our final destination
Is it a celebration of oblivion
Where there's nothing to save you
With the burden so heavy
Or a place of peace
We must make a choice
Our back is breaking
Between forever and death
So just open that door
But which door is the one
That will set us free?
