Extinction is the rule

Without a record of how humans survived
Each previous era ending in catastrophe
We should stare at the stars and wonder
How did it happen that we became modern
What kind of miracle was it that we arrived
Were we Faust and danced with the devil
It was a miracle we escaped nuclear wars
Now, somehow, we've made it out alive
How can we all escape the next disaster?
Will we reach a place and know it's time?
Does destiny exist, can we escape our fate
If extinction is the rule, what does that say?
Can we endure the ignorance of our kind?
How long before we're doomed?
Or are we the sole exception
Have we found the answer
Only to find it is now too late?
Forsaken, perhaps, we are
Or maybe instead a positive future looms?
